Caught this exhibition at the Ballarat Art Gallery last weekend, prior to its close on Jan 26. Peter was my 1st year sculpture lecturer at Art School in the early 80s, and as one of our few Australian sculptors to gain international recognition I was interested to see a deeper view of the man and his work. Sadly he passed away earlier this month. The retrospective catalog is available from the gallery shop, and much of his impressive body of work can also be seen at peterblizzard.com.

An amazing exhibition. It's really quite moving and almost spiritual in parts, especially when you're the only one in the gallery at the end of the day locking up ;-) (yup, I work at the amazing Art Gallery, very lucky). Would have been a fantastic experience to study under Peter, he was an incredible man.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sophie, yes it was a great exhibition and many of the works did have a wonderful 'feel' about them (& lucky you working at our superb Ballarat Art Gallery!).
ReplyDeleteWhalesong moon halo was such a beatuiful work. After the exhibition opened, I went on a tour of it with Peter Blizzard. He told us about how he encouraged three musician friends to compose music based on the shapes in this work. I would really love to hear the outcome of that project.
ReplyDeleteAlthough his exhibition is over, one of his larger works is still on display in the Williamson Gallery, upstairs.
Thanks BVS, how lucky you got to tour the exhibition with Peter himself!
